Hours later, they collapsed on various pillows and cushions in what would be the living room, when it had actual furniture. The place was finally taking shape. The telephone company had sent a man out to turn on the service. And Edain had figured out where her studio would be—in the area that had been designated a den or study. Like the living room, it had towering windows, but unlike it, it was closed off from the rest of the house. There was a door off the foyer that led right into it, too. She liked the idea of having some boundaries between business and home.
Even more, she liked the idea that she was beginning to look forward to getting this project under way.
Selene was perched in the room’s only chair—a bowl-shaped rattan frame with a huge circular cushion of brown velvet. She sat at the chair’s edge, because to lean back was to fall into the piece. It was a chair for snuggling into with a soft blanket and a good book. And Selene wasn’t in a snuggling mood. She was tense, her face drawn.
“Well, sis,” Mel said, “everything’s put away, and the boxes are stacked in the garage. Until your sexy new housemate brings his own load of junk over, there’s not a lot more to be done.”
“He was going to bring a load tonight,” Edie replied, not even bothering to argue over the “sexy” comment. He was. It was an indisputable fact.
“You ought to help him, Edie,” Kara suggested. “Heck, he worked his tail off helping us move your stuff.”
“He’s probably still at the shop,” Edie said.
Mel shook her head. “Nah, it closes at five. It’s almost six already. And you know, it is kind of sad to think of him over there in that cracker-box house of his, packing all by himself. I mean, after all the help he was to us,” she added.
“I’m all for it if it will get us out of here,” Selene said softly.
They all looked at her. Kara seemed about to ask, so Edie interrupted. Mostly because she was afraid to have them all hear whatever Selene’s answer would be. She was too perceptive. “So you want to drive over to Wade’s place? Is that what you’re saying?” she asked her sisters. “I’d have thought you’d be all in by now.”
“Shoot,” Mel said. “That wasn’t anything. You’d think L.A. had made you soft to hear you talk now.”
She shrugged. “Doesn’t Mom need your help at the bar? What did she say when you called home earlier, Kara?”
“Maya and Caleb are helping her tonight,” Kara explained with a smile. “Caleb’s dad is playing grandpa/baby-sitter and loving every second of it.”
“Let’s get going, then.” Selene got to her feet, pacing toward the door. “We should take both vehicles,” she added, looking Edie right in the eye. “You can ride with me in the car.”
“Sure.” She knew she was in for it. Selene had that look in her eyes.
“Mel and I will follow along in the pickup, then.
